"I’ve never found myself in the position of being a committed and thoroughgoing active atheist. That is for me, god just doesn’t exist, there’s no pathos to that and I have some respect for people who have belief in god. I mean my father clearly needed it, and you know, if you need it, you need it. I don’t think it’s actually true, but it’s not my job to go around to people and take away from people things they find valuable, even if I think myself they’re illusions. As human beings, we’re deluded about all sorts of things. Most of the beliefs I have are probably false in one way or another. And I think it would be a very sadistic activity to go around and try to reform other people’s lives. So, I think that particular background gives me a slightly different take on these things than other people, in that I’m neither a religious believer, nor do I think it’s terribly important to be. I am an atheist, but I don’t think it’s terribly important to be a militant about that."
